What we collect
When you visit this website, contact us, or retain GM Law Group, we collect personal information necessary to respond to you and to act on your matter. The categories include:
- Contact data: name, email, phone, postal address.
- Matter data: the legal issue you describe, parties involved, and (once retained) documents needed to act.
- Identification data: as required for our retainer-onboarding under Law Society of Ontario By-Law 7.1.
- Site analytics: aggregated, anonymous statistics via privacy-friendly analytics. No third-party advertising trackers, no fingerprinting.
Why we collect it
We collect personal information for the following purposes:
- To respond to your inquiries and quote your matter.
- To verify identity and meet our regulatory obligations.
- To act on your file and communicate about it.
- To send you optional updates (only if you subscribe; never sold).
How long we keep it
We retain client files in accordance with the Law Society of Ontario's record-retention requirements — typically a minimum of ten years from file closure, with longer retention for matters involving real property, minors, or estates. Inquiries that do not become files are deleted within twenty-four months unless you have asked us to keep your information.
Who we share it with
We do not sell or trade personal information. We share information only as necessary to act on your matter — for example, with opposing counsel, courts and tribunals, government registries, accountants you authorize us to communicate with, and our insurers and regulators where required.
Your rights
Under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), you have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, to request correction of inaccurate information, to withdraw consent (subject to legal and regulatory limits), and to make a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
To exercise these rights, contact our Privacy Officer at [email protected].
